A family in Kapsongoro village of Nandi county is in mourning after their son allegedly took his own life as a result of failure to secure a job.

The deceased, Michael Kibet, 26, who graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), is said to have died by suicide at his brother’s compound in Lessos after his efforts to get employment proved futile.

People Daily established that Kibet graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in ICT and Telecommunication from the Juja-based institution in 2021 having also scored A plain from Meteitei Boys High School in Nandi county.

Neighbours said the deceased had hoped to secure employment immediately after his studies after emerging at the top of his class.

“We are yet to come to terms with the loss. Kibet has been a very humble and responsible young man who interacted well with people,” said a neighbour.

The deceased until his death, was living with his mother, a retired nurse and single mother, who has been the family’s sole breadwinner after the death of her husband.

While confirming the incident, area Chief David Rugut said the deceased hanged himself outside his brother’s house out of frustration for failing to secure a job after graduation.

“It is said that the family has lost such a bright student and dependable professional in the entire Chepsangor location. Michael was a very hardworking and disciplined boy in our location. He took his own life out of frustration according to his brother,” said Rugut.

Police moved the body of the deceased to Samaritan Funeral Home in Kapsabet as funeral preparations continue as investigation into the incident commence.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise in the country with experts blaming stress and depression for the worrying trend.
