Man pleads for a permit to take alcohol any time of day

A Nyahururu court was treated to a light moment after a middle-aged man requested the court's permission to drink alcohol during 'working hours'.

John Maina told Resident Magistrate Cynthia Muhoro his life depended on alcohol and he could not operate without being drunk.

“I normally fall to the ground and lose focus when free of alcohol, I have to keep drinking in order to stay on my toes. I, therefore, ask this court to offer me a letter which will permit me to drink any time,” said Maina.

The man pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly. The court heard that he was arrested in Ol Kalou town on Wednesday alongside three other suspects— Ann Wairimu, Joseph Maina and Francis Gatere— who all pleaded guilty.

“I am very sorry and I will not disturb anyone when I'm drunk, please forgive me,” he pleaded for leniency.

The court ordered the four to pay a fine of Sh500 each or face a one-week jail sentence.

Police in the area has launched a crackdown on alcohol outlets flouting the law on stipulated drinking hours. Lenient fines and sentences have been blamed for repeat offenders. - KNA
