The suspension of the national premier league has contributed to low fitness levels amongst local players, one of the country’s illustrious coaches has said.

Tusker head coach Robert Matano said ever since the league was put on hold indefinitely, players have been rusty and are struggling to rediscover their fitness levels.

“You cannot take away the fact there are fitness concerns among players and this has been majorly brought about by having their regular routine of playing in big-time domestic leagues coming to an abrupt stop,” said Matano.

He added: “Most players are unfit which is not good for teams vouching to win cups. If you don’t play frequently, then it is hard to get the desired results,” said Matano.

Matano made the remarks after Tusker was restricted to a barren draw by CS Sfaxien of Tunisia in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup play-offs at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Tusker endured nervy moments from the Tunisian side which is currently leading their domestic league with 13 points from seven matches.

The league was suspended on November 18 after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded the Football Kenya Federation.
