Migori County has beefed up Covid-19 measures to arrest the pandemic after four Indian variants were detected in the county.

Governor Okoth Obado and county commissioner Boaz Cherutich in a joint press statement in Migori Town said the measures have been necessitated by spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths in the county.

"Since the outbreak of Covid 19 last year, we used to record an average of a death a month. But from May 1st we have recorded 21 deaths which is more than double the 40 deaths Migor has recorded since we started to put numbers," Obado said.

The governor said during the period the number of reported cases have also increased.

"We have recommended new measures which will involve all multi-sectoral players as we are afraid of a new wave which may see the virus mutate further," Obado said.

Cherutich said they plan to put up a multi-sectoral committee from ward and sub-location level to involve both county and National government officials.

"The groups will be manning road blocks to take tests and temperatures from travelers especially from nearby Tanzania and bordering counties," Cherutich said.

The two leaders said they have already mapped out notorious bars and hospitals that have been flouting rules to curb spread of the virus.

"We have bars and drinking joints that have been operating beyond curfew time and packing revellers, we have blacklisted them and will break them by revoking their licenses," Cherutich said.

They warned two private hospitals that have been notorious for keeping bodies past the 72 hours stipulated before burial.

The county said they will enforce morgues from allowing bodies from communities and keeping those from hospitals past 48 hours.

Chiefs and their assistants have been tasked to record all deaths and offer security to ensure burial ceremony, as from picking them from morgues and home, never take more than one hour.

Families and church members in a funeral arrangement will never be more than 50 with only two tents allowed as police officers have been instructed to step up swoops and arrests to ensure the rules are enforced.
