Residents of Gilgil have been left in shock after the mutilated body of a middle aged woman, who had been missing for the past one week in unclear circumstances, was found on Monday covered with shrubs.

The body of Ann Nyambura was found in a section of Gitare forest by members of the public who in turn reported to the police.

Her right hand had been chopped off at the wrist and a section of her head had been crushed on one side using a blunt object.

Following the move police launched a manhunt for a man who was last seen with her in the sleepy village which is located 20kms from Gilgil town.

According to a witness Amos Wainaina, the deceased was well known in the village and her disappearance had left area residents in fear.

He said that her relatives and friends had searched for her in various hospitals and mortuaries to no avail until the herders stumbled on her decomposing body.

“Whoever killed her tried to cover the body using bushes in the nearby thicket but this was exposed by grazing livestock before police were called on,” he said.

Gilgil OCPD Emmanuel Opuru confirmed the recovery of the body adding that it had been collected and taken to area mortuary.

He said that initial investigations pointed to murder adding that an inquest file had been opened as part of the investigations.
