Moi University has increased students’ accommodation fees by more than 70 percent for the next semester commencing this September, bringing into light the decade-long financial woes at the institution that is set to hurt the pockets of parents and students.

This will see students pay accommodation fees of Sh10,000 per semester, up from Sh2,750 charged last semester.

The institution moved swiftly to make the fresh changes within the students’ online portal without necessarily giving any prior notice, just a week before reopening.  Students are expected to pay for their accommodation before the semester begins next week.

The new charges have been applied on the main hostels which house almost half of the students’ populations depending on the internal accommodation.

Sources within the finance department and Dean of students Emmy Rugut confirmed the institution effected the changes but declined to give reasons, referring people daily to contact the vice chancellor who failed to respond on the matter.

Fresh increment

The fresh increment follows a previous surge from the Sh2,500 students paid a year back. The latest move is set to trigger resistance from the students and parents who are also battling high cost of living amid slim income.

Like most public universities, Moi University is financially crunched and has been struggling to sustain its operations following a dip in self-sponsored students and slash of government funding.

The institution is stuck with more than Sh5 billion debt, according to the latest audit released in July by the Auditor General Nancy Gathungu.
