Mombasa magistrate succumbs to coronavirus
Kenya’s Judiciary suffered a blow yesterday after Mombasa Principal Magistrate Elvis Michieka succumbed to Covid-19 just days after he was interviewed for a promotion for Chief Magistrate’s position whose results are yet to be released.
Family, friends and legal organisations eulogise the magistrate, who was based in Mombasa, as a hardworking and devoted colleague.
Chief Justice David Maraga said Michieka had been hospitalised at a Nairobi hospital for the last two weeks after developing breathing difficulties.
“Death has robbed us of a devoted judicial officer, who rendered his services with exceptional diligence.”
Irreplaceable pillar
He termed it unfortunate that Michieka did not live to see the results of the job he was interviewed for recently.
“On behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire legal fraternity for this shocking loss,” said the CJ in a press statement.
Michieka was diagnosed with Covid-19 at the city hospital. His body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home.
Kenya Magistrate and Judges Association secretary general Derrick Kuto said Micheka had died at the Karen Hospital in Nairobi where he had been receiving treatment.
“We have lost another friend and a diligent colleague. He is an irreplaceable pillar in the judicial system,” said Kuto.
