Mombasa Governor to partner with Denmark after recent cyclone damages

Mombasa County Governor, Abdulswamad Nassir, in a statement shared on May 24, 2024, hinted at a possible collaboration with the Danish government to restore to life the city after cyclone damages.

Governor Nassir expressed gratitude for the friendship and cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark that has lasted over 60 years.

Danish partnership

During a recent visit by the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, H.E. Dan Jorgensen, Nassir was elated to receive the minister as they deliberated on how to foster their people-to-people relations.

The meeting also served as a platform to highlight the impacts of global warming which have resulted in clones Hidaya and Ialy in the county.

“The spirit of cooperation between the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Mombasa has been thriving over the last sixty years,” Governor Nassir stated.

Governor Nassir highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing its potential to save the best of Mombasa for future generations.

“Our discussions centred around partnership to mitigate against the effects of global warming. Mombasa has in recent years witnessed extreme weather patterns; most recently Cyclones Hidaya and Ialy that hurt the infrastructure of our city County,” Nassir said.

The governor also reiterated Mombasa’s steadfast commitment to fostering strong ties with the Danish delegation and was represented by their Undersecretary for Cooperative Development, Ole Thonke.

Special Economic Zone

Ole Thonke and the Ambassador to Kenya, Stephan Schonemann joined in for a briefing concerning the ongoing development of the Special Economic Zone that is currently ongoing in Miritini.

“I also took the opportunity to brief the Danish delegation which also included the Undersecretary for Cooperative Development, Mr. Ole Thonke and the Ambassador to Kenya, H.E Stephan Schonemann on our plans for the Mombasa County Special Economic Zone in Miritini where we plan to break ground in the next quarter,” Governor Nassir said.

Nassir briefed them about the upcoming groundbreaking for Mombasa County Special Economic Zone in Miritini scheduled to happen in the next quarter.

As  Mombasa prepares to embark on the implementation phase of the SEZ, Governor Nassir welcomed potential manufacturers and investors to participate in the transformative zone in Miritini, stating it will help them tap into accessing a greater East Africa.

“Manufacturers and industrial players from across the Globe are welcome to participate in the unique opportunity that our SEZ presents for accessing greater East Africa,” Governor Nassir added.
