More than 12,000 new IDs uncollected in Coast region
A total of 371,268 new national Identity cards (IDs) have so far been issued in the Coast region since 2017 to date, according to data from the National Registration Bureau (NRB) in the region.
At the same time more than 12,000 other new IDs are uncollected according to Deputy Director of National Registration Bureau in Coast Region Aggrey Masai.
The above figures partly project the potential new voters across all the six counties in the region even as the electoral body rrolled out the enhanced continuous Voter registration exercise yesterday.
According to Masai, of the 371,268 new IDs, Kilifi County is leading with 137,679, followed by Kwale at 86,541, Mombasa (74,363), Taita Taveta (32, 647), Tana River( 29,704) and Lamu with 10,334.
Most of the new IDs were issued in 2017 where a total of 121,047 identity cards were issued according to tabulation of ID cards received in the region from the NRB headquarters.
Eligible Kenyans
In an effort to register more eligible Kenyans, he said from the start of this month, his office has rolled out a crash program targeting to register 139,000 people in the region between this month and January next year.
“This exercise will involve mobile registration. In every sub county, the officials will be going out four times every week.
We have made proper arrangements to ensure that the registration forms are taken to Nairobi and we get the ID copies on a daily basis.
We are trying to be as efficient as possible coordinating with the production centre in Nairobi so that people get their IDs within three to five days,” he said.
Masai at the same time revealed that the region has a total of 39,805 uncollected IDs of which 12,695 are new and 27,110 are replacements.
