MP wants Raila prosecuted should planned demonstrations degenerate into chaos
Mosop Member of Parliament Abraham Kirwa wants Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga held responsible for any acts of violence that may arise from his planned mass action on Monday, March 20, 2023.
Addressing members of the press on Sunday, Kirwa urged President William Ruto to take necessary action including prosecution against the former prime minister should the anti-government protests degenerate into violence.
Kirwa also called on Raila to reconsider his calls for mass action and instead embrace peaceful discussions with the government.
The legislator claimed that Raila wants to overthrow a legitimate government elected through a democratic process.
"It is very sad that Raila Odinga wants to shed innocent blood in the country. When will Raila concede defeat? President Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua were elected in a free, fair and verifiable election and even the Supreme Court confirmed that," Kirwa noted.
Terming Azimio's concerns as baseless, the first-term legislator said the Kenya Kwanza regime has only been in office for only six months and should be given enough time to bring down the cost of living.
"President Uhuru messed up with Kenya's economy, and now his handshake brother who was part of failed regime wants to question President Ruto a few months after the elections? Is Raila genuine? He posed.
He urged the Head of State to take necessary action to protect lives of Kenyans ahead of the Monday demonstrations.
Kirwa also invited the International Criminal Court (ICC) to monitor the events in Kenya and hold anyone responsible for any loss of lives in the country accountable.
"Kenya is a country governed by the laws. One person cannot be breaking the rules and government is silent. We also urge ICC to watch keenly what is happening in our country. We don't want to go the 2007/2008 way," Kirwa said while referring to the 2007-08 Post Election Violence that left at least 1,200 people dead and half a million others displaced.
Azimio leaders have threatened to march to State House tomorrow to pile pressure on the government to, among others, lower the cost of living as well as address their concerns on alleged electoral malpractices in the last presidential election, which Raila claims he won.
