Two MPs from Mombasa have demanded fairness in the investigations into a suspected container smuggling racket at the Port of Mombasa believed to be depriving Kenyans of tax revenues.

Mvita MP Abdulswa- m and Nassir and Mishi Mboko of Likoni are reading mischief in the manner in which the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was handling the matter.

DCI has asked Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani to temporary ask the Kenya Ports Authority(KPA) general manager of port operations Sudi Mwasinago and the acting principal officer for ship operations Evans Akunava to step aside.

The DCI says the managers should be out of office to pave the way for investigations.

The MPs are now asking the DCI to target the real culprits and not victimise some managers.

“If someone has not been charged, why is he being told to step aside, this is a matter that should be looked into, to ensure rights of employment of the managers are respected, we feel someone wants them out for his own interests,”Mboko added.

“We will stay firm to ensure people are not victimised, we will not sit and watch, because it has become a tendency of using DCI to settle scores,” said Nassir.

Speaking during a media briefing in Mombasa yesterday, the MPs also castigated the Kenya Revenue Authority for keeping quiet when individuals are being frustrated by DCI, yet KRA should explain how much they have lost in term s of revenue.
