A parliamentary committee has rejected the nomination of Dr Phyllis Wagacha as a member of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) representing the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The Labour Committee, in its recommendation, cited the nominee's age, as grounds for the rejection.

The committee noted it had established that the nominee is 75 years old, an age they say is above the mandatory retirement age for civil servants.

The committee said despite Wagacha, who was nominated to the position by President William Ruto, possessing the necessary academic qualifications "it is necessary for the representatives of the PSC to be below the mandatory retirement age".

"To this end, the committee notes that the nominee is not suitable to hold the position of a member of SRC on account of age," the committee said adding that the nominee was born in Kiambu in 1948.

The mandatory retirement age for civil servants is 65.

However, the fate of the nominee lies with the House, which has a history of amending reports from its committees.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly on Thursday approved the appointment of Mary Wanyonyi as chair of the Commission of Revenue Allocation (CRA).

Wanyonyi, a spouse of former chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati, appeared before the departmental committee on Finance and Planning chaired by Molo MP Kuria Kimani last week.

Wanyonyi, a Certified Accountant, now awaits an official appointment from President Ruto before assuming office.
