ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi has spoken against the postponement of the 2022 general elections.

In a statement released on Saturday, July 24, Mudavadi, who was hosted in Nyandarua county by Governor Francis Kimemia dismissed statements that next year’s polls will be postponed.

“I have listened to President Uhuru many times and when he has spoken about transition, I don’t remember him saying at any one time at all that he intends to extend his term in office. Those are side shows. He has never pronounced himself on that issue. As far as we are concerned, we are moving forward in accordance with our constitution and elections will be held in August next year since IEBC itself has already released the time table.” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi also disagreed with the African Court on Human Rights which gave a green light for the postponement of elections citing the impact of Covid-19 on African countries.

The ANC party boss argued that Kenya's 2010 constitution was the sole authority in deciding electoral and matters within the country.

Mudavadi claimed that the advice of the African Court is well perceived when it comes to matters of the impact of Covid-19.

“The Supreme law of this country is the Constitution of Kenya. That is the law. If there are any other treaties or external agreements they have to be domesticated in the context of Kenya’s constitution. You cannot have a treaty or advisory from outside that can override the supreme law of the country. The Kenya Constitution comes first and we have to follow the timetable of the constitution of Kenya,” Mudavadi said.

The ANC boss also took a swipe at his competitors seeking the 2022 presidential vote adding that what Kenyans need is a revitalised economy.

“Don’t be cheated by semantics. Mtu anatumia kizungu mrefu mwingine anasema trickle down economy mwengine bottoms -up, niulize ukichukua chupa ya maji na uweke bottoms up sio hiyo ni kusema maliza kabisa. Mtu anameza kila kitu na mwananchi atapata nini? And how are you going to finance this economy ya kusema bottoms-up. And taxation has increased that's why I am stressing for a government that will ensure businesses thrive,' Musalia said.
