A sombre mood engulfed Nyakahura village in Kangema Murang'a, after five family members perished in a road accident on Sunday evening.

The family is said to have travelled to Machakos to visit their in-laws but their journey back was cut short at Kwangolia area on Wote-Machakos road.

Peninah Muthoni, a family member to the deceased says she lost three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren in the accident.

She said they had accompanied her elder son Michael Kang’ethe to visit his in-laws but she opted to stay back with one of her great-grandchildren.

She was however not in a position to divulge the details on how the accident happened saying other family members who sustained injuries are still in the hospital.

Muthoni said his son is set to undergo a leg amputation operation at the hospital.

"It's very painful to lose five family members at a go. I am yet to come to terms with it," she said.

"What I need for now is assistance to prepare a decent send-off for them because I do not have the capacity to do so," she added.

Monica Wanjiru a neighbour to the family said she heard Muthoni wailing and she rushed to check on her and that is when she learnt about the tragedy.

Wanjiru said she was able to communicate with other people who were in the entourage.

"It's only one vehicle that was involved in the accident, though we have no clear details how it happened," she said.
