Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has urged residents of Mt Kenya region not to support a presidential candidate who is not a native in the August 9 elections.

Wa Iria said the region has a lot to protect and thus must elect one of their own to look after their interests.

Speaking at Ihura Stadium yesterday, the outgoing governor maintained that he shall be in the presidential race and nothing shall make him back down.

He held that ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto are no better than him, saying he shall beat them hands down in the poll.  He also slammed those who have been claiming that the presidential contest is a two-horse race, saying this is demeaning other candidates.

He at the same time noted that the narrative has been on for a while now, claiming it is a deliberate effort to discourage other candidates from vying for the top most seat.

“I have said several times that nothing bars any leader from Mt Kenya to vie for the presidential seat and I will be in the race so that I can protect the interests of my people,” he said.

County boss said he is largely banking on votes from the region to clinch to the seat.

“If I get the eight million votes from the region, that will be enough to take me to State House and no other candidate can get such numbers,” he said.

Addressing the residents, he blamed the current divisions in the region on leaders, who he claimed are seeking different political affiliations to serve their own interests.
