Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi has ruled out joining any of the big coalitions in the run-up to the August 9 elections.

In a thinly veiled attack at President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, Muturi charged that it was political bad manners for a government to support opposition and for the opposition to support the government.

His declaration comes  even as Muturi who is also the National Assembly Speaker announced that should his DP emerge the winner in the general election, he will then sign a post-election pact with any other willing party.

He said that although forming and joining coalitions is good, there must be trust to guide such talks.

“Coalitions just like marriages must be guided by principles such as fidelity, tolerance, honesty and integrity and the glue that keeps them together is simple. Consultations, Consensus, Cooperation and compromise,” said Muturi.

He went on: “In 2008 the International community forced us to come up with a grand coalition whose anchoring glue was consultations and what mattered was service to the people. Now we seem to have mastered the art of coalitions but still lack in honest consultations. It’s not the size of the party that matters or even the coalition but integrity and honesty of the parties in the coalition.”

Yesterday at the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Bomas, Muturi declared that he was not going to drop out of the race to succeed Uhuru.
