Mwalala has no hard feelings despite Bandari sacking
Twahir Muhiddin will take charge of Bandari FC on interim basis following the dismissal of Bernard Mwalala on Sunday.
Muhiddin, a former Bandari coach himself, has been serving as the technical director and will now take over the coaching duties as the club searches for a permanent replacement.
Mwalala’s nadir came on Sunday after losing 2-1 to Tusker FC in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match, the clubs’ eighth defeat this season, which has left them in an unfamiliar position 11 in the 17-team league.
The tactician’s days were numbered after his team’s poor run of form since they lost to Guinea’s Horoya in the CAF Confederation Cup in November, as they have managed just three wins since then, losing seven and drawing once.
For a club that recorded back-to-back second-place finishes in the league and was touted among title contenders, this has been a low that left the club with no choice but to sack Mwalala.
“I have done my best and always given all my energy. It is unfortunate the results have not been appealing but we cannot blame it on the management or the coaching it’s a matter of bad luck,” said the former Nzoia Sugar coach.
“Since I took over, I have been among the best coaches, taking the club to CAF and maintaining a top three position,” he added.
A statement from club chairman Musa Hassan Musa confirming Mwalala’s exit yesterday said: “The board of trustees of Bandari FC has asked the head coach Bernard Mwalala to step aside due to the poor performance of the club recently.
The board, therefore appointed the current Technical Director, Twahir Muhiddin as the caretaker coach with immediate effect.”
Mwalala, who joined Bandari from Nzoia in July 2018, was linked to Tanzanian giants Simba in November but declined to join the club where he played as a striker, opting to stay in Mombasa with the hope that things will change, but it was not to be.
He becomes the sixth coach to be sacked in KPL this season after Fred Ambani, Melis Medo and Frank Ouna all at Wazito, Henry Omino at Kisumu All Stars and Divaldo Alves at Sofapaka. Andre Casa Mbungo resigned from AFC Leopards last month due to non-payment of his salary.
