Nairobi City County has suspended payment of all contractors, suppliers and services providers until September, defying Parliament’s order in June requiring settling of supplier dues before August 9 election.

The county government did not give further explanation on the notice to the suppliers why such delays are being experienced, some of which have dragged on since last year despite the existence of a payment plan to settle all pending bills.

“Kindly take notice that all payments have been suspended until September, 2022,” Acting head of Nairobi County Treasury Joseph Gathiaka said in the undated notice pinned on July 21 at City Hall. The move is set to threaten the operations of several businesses that are already hurting from the pandemic ravages and election jitters.

Pending bills is at the heart of the Nairobi gubernatorial race with each of the aspirants now pledging to suppliers that they will settle the debts as soon as they get into the office.

Last month, the Executive Office of the President told parliament that the treasury had money for payment of over 1000 suppliers, comprising construction firms, media houses, and medical firms which rendered services to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
