Nairobi, Nakuru, leading in prevalence

Nairobi, Nakuru and Kiambu have recorded the highest numbers of cancer cases in Kenya.

Other counties with high cases are Machakos, Nyeri, Murang'a and Kitui.

While major towns seem to be grappling with cancer, Mandera, Samburu and Lamu recorded less than 10 cases each.

According to the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, breast cancer was prevalent in Nairobi, Nakuru and Nyeri while Nakuru, Machakos and Kiambu counties recorded the highest cases of cervical cancer.

High numbers

On the other hand, Lamu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Tana River and Wajir recorded zero cases of breast cancer. Similarly, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir did not record any cases of cervical cancer. Notably, Kakamega county recorded majority of the oesophagus cancer cases while Nyeri and Nakuru followed closely with high numbers of this type of cancer.

Majority of the prostate cancer cases were reported in Nairobi, Machakos and Nakuru counties while Mandera, Marsabit, West Pokot and Lamu never recorded even a single case.

For the colon and rectum cancer, Nakuru, Nairobi and Kiambu recorded highest number of cases while seven counties including Siaya, Wajir and Turkana recorded zero cases.

Mombasa county had only one case of the two cancers.

On the cancer deaths,15 percent were as a result of oesophagus cancer while cervical and breast cancers recorded close to 10 percent each.
