Attempts by matatu operators in Nakuru to move back to the Central Business District (CBD) two years after their eviction by former Governor Lee Kinyanjui’s administration were yet again thwarted by the police.

The operators, who campaigned against Kinyanjui over their eviction from the CBD, found home in now Governor Susan Kihika who, in her campaign, promised to allow them back to town.

Yesterday, the operators had stormed their old terminus, blocking private vehicles from parking in matatu parking zones.

Their stay was, however, short lived as police were sent in to restore order and eject the matatus, sending them back to their terminus.

The move comes a day after Governor Kihika toured the new matatu termini and assured operators that proper structures will be put in place to have a centralised terminus equipped with social amenities.

Public participation

She was, however, not clear whether the matatus would be allowed back to the CBD with yesterday storming by operators seen as a move to poke the new governor into implementing her election manifesto.

Kihika in her tours stated that public participation will take place to ensure the operators are satisfied with the new modern stage by setting up a taskforce to streamline the transport sector.

“We want to come up with permanent solutions for the city that will be good and favourable to those in the public sector as well as the passengers, to ensure we curb congestion,” said Kihika.
