Three children aged 15,11 and 9 died on Saturday after drowning into an open quarry filled with rain water in Sachangwan, Molo in Nakuru County.

The three, Grace Wairimu 15(class 6), Victor Kaniaru 11(class 3) and Michael Kiritu 8(grade 1) were pupils Mukinyai primary school.

Mukinyai assistant chief Zack Monari said the three, a girl and two boys are suspected to have been playing around the open quarry when they accidentally slipped into the pool of water.

"We suspect that one of them could have fallen into the water and the others drowned too while attempting to save their sibling," he said.

Monari said that the open quarries which were left after the activities were completed has continued to pose a serious challenge to children within the sub location who are likely to be victims.

Nominated MCA Rachel Maru who has been conducting rescue services for the Red Cross along the hotspot areas of Sachangwan decried the menace of open quarries and called on the government to ensure that people engaged in such activities are compelled to refill before leaving it.

Divers from within the area swung into action and retrieved the bodies minutes after an alert was sent of the unfortunate incident.

The bodies of the three siblings have been taken to Molo Sub-county hospital mortuary.
