More than 2,000 households out of an estimated 3,372 have already left Maasai Mau forest ahead of planned eviction in November.

Narok County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti yesterday told the press that more families were expected to leave in the next few weeks.

“More than 2,000 families have left. We expected the remaining to leave before the expiry of the 60-day notice,” he said.

He added those who would not have left when the notice expires would be kicked out.

Kimiti said the forest was a security operation area and asked politicians to keep off.

“We will not allow politicians to incite settlers,” he said.

The County Commissioner spoke as the Maasai Women Caucus asked settlers to leave to pave the way for its restoration.

Mau, they said, was an important water tower, adding that no one who benefitted from irregular land allocation should feel victimised.

“It is an important resource for the people of Narok, neighbouring counties and the country. A community should not feel that it owns it,” said Christine Lemein, a member of the Narok County Assembly.
