Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was yesterday released on Sh10 million cash bail and ordered not to drink in public places until the case against him is heard and determined.

Owino has been charged with attempting to murder disk jockey Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, by shooting him on the neck at B Club in Kilimani, Nairobi, on January 17.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi ruled that the cash bail would be used to settle DJ Evolve’s medical bill while he is still admitted in hospital and subsequent treatment upon discharge.

“The sum will be deposited in court in four equal instalments of Sh2.5 million beginning  this first month when he will be released,” ruled the magistrate.

Deposit passport

The magistrate also ordered Babu to provide two contact persons of his stature, who shall deposit copies of their IDs in court and provide an undertaking that the Sh10 million will be paid as ordered.

“Any money which will remain unutilised shall remain in court until completion of this case,” ruled Andayi.

“The accused person shall also deposit his passport and other travel documents in court.

He is also prohibited from commenting on this case on any forum be it social media or public gathering where he will be attending as a Member of Parliament or in his personal capacity,” he added.

The magistrate ruled that “detaining Babu Owino would be tantamount to pulling back the treatment Orinda was receiving.”

Orinda’s family in the pre- bail report had opposed to Babu’s release on bail, saying they are fearing for his security.

The report tabled in court also indicated that Orinda could not move his hands and legs.
