Curfew: Kenya Editors’ Guild condemns attack on journalist
Kenya Editors' Guild on Friday condemned police brutality that saw NTV journalist manhandled by GSU officer in Mombasa.
Cameraman, Peter Wainaina, was going about his duty shortly before curfew time that began on Friday.
"Wainaina was assaulted and blocked from performing his duty in full glare of the public.
"Luckily, this incident was caught on tape and the offending policeman is clearly identifiable.
"He is not an officer of the law. He is a criminal," said Churchill Otieno, Kenya Editors' Guild President, in a statement.
Otieno called on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to take action against the officer.
"Police have to be professional at all times including treating Kenyans with dignity.
"What we have witnessed as journalists is a rogue police action blind to the lived realities especially of the ordinary Kenyans," Otieno added.
Life is bound to drastically change for Kenyans after President Uhuru Kenyatta imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the war against the spread of coronavirus, even as he warned of more extreme measures if the ones already in place prove inadequate.
