Deputy President Ruto: Sh1.5 billion to fix water woes
Deputy President William Ruto yesterday announced that the government has committed Sh1.5 billion from World Bank, money that will go towards addressing issues of water shortage in the Eastlands area of Nairobi.
Ruto, who was speaking yesterday at Buru Buru One Primary, Nairobi, said the concerns raised by most residents from the densely populated area, will be addressed by the end of this month.
“Water shortage has been the biggest challenge here and as government, we have decided to ensure we deal with this problem. We are planning to have one big tunnel that will be connected from Kiambu county.
Buying water
Most neighbourhoods in Nairobi especially in areas of Huruma, Mathare and some parts of Eastleigh, residents are forced to buy water. For instance, a 20 litre jerrycan costs between Sh35 and Sh100.
At the same time, Ruto said the government will be working towards repairing the sewer system across the capital.
According to Ruto, the government has mobilised Sh10 billion from the African Development Bank, money that will help repair and install sewer systems by June this year.
“Most of these communicable diseases are brought by poor hygiene. The Jubilee government is committed to ensure most houses in Nairobi are fully connected with a proper system,” promised Ruto.
Meanwhile, Ruto expressed the need to offer special needs children with a distinct learning environment that will help them meet their potential and overcome self-esteem difficulties.
The DP said the government is constructing friendly facilities, ramps to ease mobility of learners who use wheel chairs and also training teachers in public schools on how to manage to such learners.
In his Eastlands tour, Ruto also unveiled new classroom blocks at Mowlem Primary school and opened a swimming pool at Umoja 1 Primary School.
