The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) yesterday called on all religious organisations to emulate the example set by the Catholic Church and join in the fight against corruption.

EACC chief executive, Twalib Mbarak commended the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) for taking the step to break the corruption chain in their anti-graft campaign, which will run for the next six months.

“EACC welcomes the statement issued by KCCB outlining measures to be taken in a six-month national campaign by the Catholic faithful in Kenya in support of the fight against corruption,” he said in a statement.

KCCB on Saturday said it will not allow the church to be used as a political platform, adding that it will no longer accept direct donations from politicians.

The bishops further stated that contributions for Catholic church projects will now be done via mobile money transfer or cheques.

Mbarak regretted that corruption has reached disturbing levels in the country and said culpable individuals are known to channel their ill-gotten wealth to religious organisations, mainly the church.

“The Commission commends the move by the Catholic bishops calling for proper accountability and transparency in handling of all financial donations to the Church,” Mbarak said.
