Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission sounds warning to county chiefs
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has warned it will not hesitate to take action on any county governor who will misappropriate funds meant for the Covid-19 mitigation measures.
Public officials who will award tenders to relatives and cronies will also not be spared by the EACC dragnet as well as suppliers who will overprice their goods and supply sub-standard products.
Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak noted money being allocated to fight the coronavirus pandemic is misused for selfish gain.
“This is a message to the County Governors and others involved that we are monitoring how the money is going to be spent.
They should not take advantage of procurement under the guise of this emergency to enrich themselves as opposed to the intended beneficiaries because we will get them very easily,” Mbarak said Tuesday.
Mbarak insisted that the county chiefs must be ready to account for every shilling they employ towards the Covid-19 response measures and that all procurement laws and regulations must be adhered to as demanded by the Constitution of Kenya and the Public Finance Management (PFM) Act.
The CEO was speaking on Tuesday at the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Board at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) when he donated Sh1.2 million from the EACC commissioners and staff.
Ms Jane Karuku, who chairs the fund board, received the EACC donation in the presence of EACC Vice Chairperson Ms Sophia Lepuchirit.
