With slightly over two years left before the 2022 presidential election, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi continued oiling his political machine—leaving no doubt that he is going for the biggest job in the land.

On Friday,  Moi hosted the fifth delegation—a group of grassroots leaders from Mt Kenya—at his Kabarak home in Nakuru county where speaker after speaker endorsed his candidature.

Led by former  Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina and Kiambu Woman Rep Muthoni waa Mucomba (both from the ruling Jubilee Party), the delegation promised to conduct a door-to-door campaign for Senator Moi in Mt Kenya.

“The people of Mt Kenya are smart people and even if you have not told us what is in the envelope, we can see it and we know its contents… you’re the next president,” said wa Muchomba.

Presidential race

Senator Moi, the youngest son of former President Daniel arap Moi, has hinted in the past that he would vie for the presidency in 2022 something which has put him on a collision course with Deputy President William Ruto.

The two leaders come from the Rift Valley region where Ruto is seen as the de facto leader and a front-runner in the 2022 presidential race.

During the Kabarak meeting,  Moi said he is going to make his political declaration once the 40 days of mourning his father are over, adding that he will open the envelope at the opportune time.

Moi, who is also the chairman of Kenya’s oldest political party, Kanu, first hosted members of the clergy from Baringo county at his Kabarak home on March 1 who anointed and prayed for him.

He thereafter received—separately—delegations from Baringo Central and Baringo North before Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga came calling with MCAs, county officials and other grassroots leaders.

But, speaking in Mosoriot, Nandi County on Saturday, DP Ruto urged his supporters to be calm terming the goings on in the political arena as normal and likening it to a cow which is about to give birth.
