Homa Bay Health department has intensified public awareness seeking to prevent the spread of coronavirus among residents.

The department has partnered with 18 civil society organizations (CSOs) in the county to sensitise locals on the prevention methods of the virus in an initiative christened Komesha Corona Okoa Maisha.

The initiate came after it was established that some residents including senior citizens, fishermen, children and traders have not fully embraced mitigation measures by the government on containment of Covid-19 spread.

It emerged that such people do not maintain social distance and also fail to observe regular hand washing.

County Health Services Director Gordon Okomo and the head of Homa Bay county CSOs network Samuel Odhiambo flagged off a team of health workers who will move around the 40 wards in the county to educate residents about prevention of the virus spread.

The exercise, which started yesterday, will continue for two months.

Dr Okomo said most residents are aware of the dangers posed by the virus but some have not been sensitised on its prevention.

Odhiambo said the team is using community health volunteers to spread the message to the grassroots.
