How world leaders mourn retired President Moi

Retired President Moi, the longest serving President of Kenya, was a man of his own style of governance and was considered a political force to reckon with in the country and beyond.

His death could not go unnoticed even beyond Kenyan boundaries, with various leaders not only mourning his passing on but also celebrated his life and times as a leader in the region.

Tanzanian President John Magufuli led other leaders in mourning Moi, saying the retired President will be remembered for his astute leadership.

“On behalf of the Tanzania Government, I convey message of condolences to President Uhuru Kenyatta and all Kenyans for the loss of retired President, Moi.

Tanzanians will remember his remarkable leadership and his efforts to strengthen the East African Community,” said Magufuli.

Active president

United States ambassador to Kenya, Kyle McCarter said America stands with Kenya during this the mourning period.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the people of Kenya and to the family and friends of former President Moi upon his passing.

As a friend and partner of Kenya for over 55 years, the United States stands with Kenyans during this time of mourning,” said McCarter.

United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott also mourned Moi saying: “I am saddened to learn of the death of the former President of Kenya, Moi.

On behalf of the British Government, I wish to extend my deepest condolences. My thoughts are with his family and friends, and the people of Kenya.”

Uganda President, Yoweri Museveni also sent goodwill message to Kenya, for the loss of the second President.

“He was a very active East African. He really supported East African unity, he would offer support to East African Federation.

When we signed the treaty for East African Co-operation we were three of us; it was me, Moi and Mwinyi of Tanzania. Mzee Moi was one of the most outspoken supporters of the East African Federation,” recounted Museveni.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also sent his message of condolence to the family, friends and relatives of the former President.

“I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Moi who passed on yesterday morning. May his soul rest in peace,” said Ahmed.

The United Nations, led by its Resident Coordinator, Siddharth Chatterjee said:  “On behalf of United Nations in Kenya, our deepest condolences to the people of Kenya and to the family of Moi, the former President of Kenya. May the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace.

Uganda Opposition leader Kizza Besigye posted on his social media page: “From humble beginnings and with a humble, submissive demeanour.

President Moi emerged to become a skilful statesman! His main legacy is affording Kenya a peaceful transition to another leader. Can now rest in peace.”

Patricia Scotland, secretary-general of the Commonwealth, of which Kenya is a member, also mourned the death of the former president.

“I’m saddened to hear about the passing away of HE Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the second President of the Republic of Kenya and a friend of the Commonwealth.

On behalf of the Commonwealth family, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.”
