The National Police Service and the Kenya Prisons Service have launched a charitable trust for the families of officers killed in the line of duty.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i yesterday said the trust will ensure families of the officers were cared for by both insurance companies and the trust.

The CS, speaking during a memorial service at the Administration Police College, Embakasi, revealed that 137 police officers and five prison officers had been killed while on duty since 2012.

“Officers need to know we care about them. We would like to be a caring society, and I will take personal interest in all these issues,” he said.

The Kenya Police Service Deputy Inspector General Edward Mbugua said a majority of such officers were young ones who left behind young families.

“We empower widows and widowers by even recruiting them in the service or as civilian staff. Even as we promise to give them fish, we should also teach and equip them to fish,” Mbugua said.

Police records indicate most officers lost their lives through bandit attacks.
