Judiciary employees told to operate from home as pandemic persists

The Judiciary yesterday directed its staff to work from home until further notice as part of the measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi said the staff had raised concern about their safety from contracting the virus.
All heads of stations have been directed to use electronic communication to serve litigants.
“We have been providing minimal essential services across our court stations to ensure access to justice is not disrupted.
However, concerns have been raised by our staff regarding their safety as they attend to wananchi and taken them into consideration and upon consultation with the Chief Justice, it is our view that the health and safety of our entire Judiciary family must be prioritised,” said Amadi.
To facilitate urgent matters, Amadi directed the heads of stations to provide contact details for that purpose.
The details, including name of judicial officers, mobile number and email addresses are to be placed prominently outside the court premises and also forwarded to the Registrar and Magistrates courts to facilitate uploading on Judiciary website.
They are also expected to ensure telephone or email enquiries by litigants and the public are responded to promptly.
“Embrace the Electronic Case Management Practise Directions, 2020 where practicable under the circumstances.
These are temporary measures and we will continue to provide further guidelines as the situation unfolds,” said Amadi.
