Kenyans cautioned to brace for heavy rains

Kenyans across most parts of the country should brave for more downpour in the coming weeks.
The weather advisory comes as reports indicate the off-season downpour is causing floods, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property in several parts of the country. Among the affected regions was Kisii.
Other reports indicated two people were drowned as they attempted cross flooded Muangeni River in Makueni on Saturday night. Their bodies were taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital.
In another incident in Makueni, 47 people narrowly escaped death after a 45-seater matatu plunged into the swollen Waani River yesterday morning while a teacher and his driver escaped unscathed as their car was swept by the raging flood waters of the same river.
And as the rains continued to pound several parts of the country, yesterday Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) said more than normal rains may be recorded in Central, Nairobi, and parts of Eastern regions—comprising Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia and Nyandarua.
In a statement, KMD director Stella Aura added that the regions will experience rains in the morning, paving way for more rainfall in the course of the day.
“Showers are expected over a few places tonight (yesterday) and over a few places in the morning giving way to sunny intervals. Showers expected over several places in the afternoon,” she said.
The weatherman said similar incidents could be witnessed in expected enhanced rains in the Western, Nyanza, Central and South Rift Valley regions.
“The counties of Kakamega; Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Narok will experience showers.
