The family of Cyrus Omondi, the Kahawa Wendani MCA, who was found dead in a hotel room in India on Wednesday night, is demanding a probe into the cause of his death.

Although Kiambu Assembly Speaker Stephen Ndichu had intimated Omondi’s death was a result of a heart attack, family, leaders and electorates yesterday raised eyebrows and asked the government to launch a conclusive investigation.

Millicent Odhiambo, the MCA’s mother, and a host of the ward residents claimed the death was not a ‘normal occurrence’.

“We need a family representative who will accompany the body back home and we will conduct a postmortem to help us unearth what exactly happened,” said his brother Stephen Odhiambo.

Rono Kosigi the Liaison Officer at Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi, India, confirmed Omondi’s body was found in a Mumbai hotel.

High alert

Omondi, 40, was in the company of County Executive Member for Education Joseph Kang’ethe, Chief Officer in charge of education Isaac Muiru and Susan Wanjiku, a nominated MCA for an education workshop.

Kiambu Governor James Nyoro yesterday urged residents of the area to stop speculating over the cause of death and wait for the post-mortem report.

“Nothing shall be left to chance and the cause of his untimely death must be established and all necessary actions taken thereafter,” he said.

Speaking at the county headquarters when he condoled with the family of Cyrus, the governor said that the MCA was in India for an official visit and dispelled rumours that he had gone for an education benchmarking tour.

Nyoro said that his government was in constant communication with the Kenyan embassy in India with the aim of seeing how his family can be facilitated to travel there for the post-mortem exercise.

Following the news of his death, Kenyans led by President Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto took to various social media platforms to mourn the man they considered an exceptional leader.

Kiambu leaders led by Women Rep Gathoni Wamuchomba Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura and other  leaders also sent their condolences.
