Knut dismisses calls to postpone this year’s national examinations
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has dismissed calls to have this year’s national examinations postponed saying such action will disadvantage Kenyan children who have registered for the exam.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion (right) advised the government to come with new measures that will see the pandemic contained to ensure the academic calendar has not been affected.
“It is unprofessional, unethical and wrong and too early to contemplate the postponement and rescheduling of the national exams. The government should not entertain such imaginations but work towards resumption of normal business in the country,” said Sossion.
Sossion further pleaded with the government to immediately stop using boarding school facilities in treating coronavirus patients due to post-corona stigma that may arise later.
Early this week, DP William Ruto announced that the government had directed the education ministry to work with county governments to identify at least 20 boarding schools per county that can be converted into health facilities and isolation centres, if the need arises.
However, Kuppet secretary Akelo Misori called for the postponement of the national exams asserting the anxiety in the school system will not allow learners to sit for their exams, scheduled for November.
