Legislators refute claims of move to impeach DP Ruto

A group of MPs has refuted claims that there are plans to impeach Deputy President William Ruto for alleged insubordination of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Cherangany’s Joshua Kuttuny and their Navakholo counterpart Emmanuel Wangwe denied that there was motion to impeach the Deputy President.
Kanini termed the claims as a scheme to whip up public emotions.
“We have no motion or intentions to impeach DP Ruto; in fact it’s not part of our agenda.
As in Jubilee, we are focused on helping the President achieve the big four agenda since he has only two years remaining,” Kega told People Daily in an interview yesterday.
Kuttuny said impeaching the DP was not part of Uhuru’s agenda.
“We have no such instructions (to impeach Ruto) and we don’t intend to go that route,” said Kutuny.
The two spoke a day after claims that a motion to impeach the DP would be tabled when the national assembly resumes its sittings on June 2 were circulated on social media.
The National Assembly has also distanced itself from the purported motion saying the House Business Committee is yet to meet to consider and approve the business to be transacted by the House when it resumes.
“The attention of the Clerk of the National Assembly has been drawn to a fictitious document circulating on social media purporting to be an order paper for the national assembly for business to be transacted on Thursday June 2, 2020,” a statement by the National assembly Clerk Michael Sialai said.
“I wish to inform the members of the public that the document is fake and therefore has not been published by the national assembly of the republic of Kenya,” Sialai added.
The clerk explained that no notice of any special motion had been received in the offices of the Speaker or clerk of the National Assembly as alluded to in the document.
Similarly, he noted, no list of members or signatures in support of such a motion have been received in either of the two offices.
“The document circulating in the social media purporting to be the Order Paper of the National Assembly for the afternoon of June 2 is fictitious and is intended to mislead Members of the National Assembly and the general public,” he concluded.
Last week, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria alleged a plot by Jubilee MPs to impeach Ruto.
Speaking on Thursday outside Parliament Buildings, he claimed that Kieni MP Kanini Kega had drafted a motion to impeach the DP.
“I know Hon Kanini Kega has a motion ready for the impeachment of DP Ruto,” Kuria claimed. “In the mind of Uhuru, he fired Ruto a long time ago, why are we firing him twice”? he posed.
According to Kuria, the DP has accepted being at odds with the President and he is waiting for the term to end.
He has accepted he is just waiting for his term to end. Why bother to impeach someone who is already impeached by design?” posed Kuria.
Jubilee deputy secretary-general Caleb Kositany was quoted by the Nation claiming that there were plans by Uhuru’s men to impeach Ruto.
This was shortly after Ruto’s allies Senators Kipchumba Murkomen and Susan Kihika were sacked as Senate majority leader and majority whip, respectively.
