The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast heavy rains throughout the week that could result in flooding and even mudslides.

According to the department, rainfall of up to 30mm is expected in various parts of the country.

KMD Director Stella Aura said western, northwestern, northeastern, southeastern and central regions, as well as Nairobi area, are likely to be affected.

“Flooding and landslide may, therefore, be triggered by any substantial amount of rainfall in low-lying areas and over hilly grounds. The public is advised to be on the lookout in those areas that may be affected,” she warned.

Aura said areas at risk include Machakos, Kitui, Mwingi, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Busia.

Others are Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Baringo, Narok, Migori, Nandi, West Pokot, Southern Turkana, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Nakuru, Isiolo, Garissa, Marsabit, Mandera and Wajir.

She urged residents in those areas to be on the lookout for potential floods.

“Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightning strikes,” she said.

Aura also said people in landslide-prone areas, especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt Kenya, Cherangany and other hilly areas over the western region should be on high alert.
