Ministry assesses schools status ahead of reopening

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has revealed that the process of assessing the status of schools and colleges is on course in order to pave way for their gradual reopening in September.
Magoha indicated that the ministry was seeking to reduce contact in learning institutions by having fewer learners in order to reduce the risk of the disease from spreading when the institutions re-open.

“Following a Presidential directive to ministries of Education and Health to prepare for gradual reopening of schools in September, the Education ministry has started assessing its facilities to inspect their preparedness to operate with the new coronavirus environment,” said the CS.
“Starting this week, Ministry of Education officials are moving throughout all parts of the country to assess schools and colleges before filing reports to my office within the shortest possible time,” added Magoha.
He said reopening of learning institutions should prioritise transition and examination cohorts in schools, universities, teacher training colleges and Tvet institutions.
He said decisions regarding reopening of learning institutions would change as informed by prevailing circumstances and increased knowledge of coronavirus disease.
