The National Police Service is currently taking an inventory of all the police assets to match resources to areas of need and avoid wastage.

Last month, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i directed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to gazette all police stations afresh by April 2 this year.

On February 14, Mutyambai created 702 police stations by upgrading posts and camps and also gazetted 1,151 other police posts.

The move, which is part of the ongoing police reforms, is expected to bring services closer to the people and improve policing by transforming the efficiency and effectiveness of the service.

The service is currently facing a number of challenges ranging from lack of adequate resources and infrastructure.

Other policing challenges include terrorism especially in the North Eastern region, narcotics, organised crime among others.

However, adequate personnel have been trained to execute the responsibilities

More resources will be deployed in the North Eastern where according to Matiang’i, the continued weaknesses in the governance structures of Somalia has led to the resurgence of al Shabaab and other criminal groups.

This, according to Matiang’i, has further been complicated by the collaboration, cooperation and collusion between the terrorists and select elements within the local communities.

Matiang’i said the reform process was on the right trajectory and has focussed on harmonised commands and posts and stations, capacity building, equipment modernisation, automation of citizen processes and the automation of human resource management.
