National water boss arrested over graft
The National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Geoffrey Sang has been arrested over a suspected dam construction scandal.
A team of detectives from Serious Crimes Unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters raided his office on Friday morning and collected a number of documents from his office at the National Water Plaza on Dunga Road in Industrial Area, Nairobi.
The detectives are said to have arrived at the offices at around 10am and only left after close to four hours.
The NWHSA board Chairman, Erick Okeyo confirmed that detectives visited their offices but was not aware of the details.
"Yes, this morning at around 10am detectives visited our offices but I have not been briefed about the allegations. I am only one month old at the Authority," Okeyo told People Daily.
What the detectives are investigating, People Daily established is the irregular awarding of the tender estimated to cost an estimated Sh231.1 million.
"What we have learnt from the documents we have seen is that the head of legal services at the Authority, who was to play a key role and had advised otherwise, did not sign any documents," said a senior DCI privy to the probe.
People Daily also learnt that the tender document was signed by the CEO and the contractor further breaching procurement procedures.
The head of Serious Crime Unit at the DCI headquarters on Friday said they were also investigating reports that there were foreigners involved in the scandal but the tender was only to be awarded to a Kenyan firm.
From Industrial Area, the detectives drove straight to DCI headquarters with the CEO, where he was to be questioned further.
