The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) will this week expose the major rivers and water body polluters in Nairobi.

Acting director general Mamo Boru Mamo and Nema board chair John Konchellah said Nema completed the profiling of companies that have defied the Water Quality Regulations of 2006.

“The punishment for this is to confiscate their operation licences until they comply,” Mamo told journalists in Nairobi when Nema unveiled its 2019-2024 strategic plan last week.

Nema, in the document, projects a budget of Sh18 billion required to implement six key result areas to ensure a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is achieved.

Article 42 of the Constitution stipulates that every person has the right to a clean and healthy environment.

Nema says this can be achieved by ensuring that the water quality regulations are adhered to.

The regulations provide for the protection of lakes, rivers, streams, springs, wells and other water sources.

“As such, Nema is charged with the duty of supervising and coordinating all matters related to the environment in a bid to clean rivers across the country,” said Mamo.

During the 100-day Rapid Results Initiative on effluent discharge launched on May 8, Nema arrested 30 people, closed 48 facilities and issued 37 restoration orders in Nairobi county.
