Ngirita gets 2 days in jail for skipping court
One of the prime suspects in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal Phyllis Ngirita will spend two days at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison for jumping bail.
Ngirita was yesterday sent to prison with a stern warning that she would face dire consequences, should she fail to comply with her bond terms and court orders.
Her imprisonment follows a warrant of arrest that was issued on Monday, after she failed to attend court for the hearing of a criminal case against her.
Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi noted that Ngirita had formed a habit of skipping court without any valid reason.
“I noted the accused person has been giving conflicting reasons as to why she has been skipping trial. l find she is not honest and l send her to prison for two days,” Ochoi ruled.
Asked why she skipped court, Ngirita said she had forgotten the case was coming up on Monday.
Police have been looking for her since last year when she first skipped trial and an arrest order issued against her.
On Monday, the prosecutor James Gachoka informed the court that police were yet to trace Ngirita since she had gone underground. On learning there was a warrant against her, Ngirita presented herself in court yesterday.
The court warned that she risks her Sh1 million bond being cancelled. She was charged in 2019 with several counts of evading tax amounting to Sh7 million and Sh13 million.
