Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate suspected pilferage of Sh126 million education support fund meant for needy learners.

He accused some institutions and individuals involved in management of the county and national government charity funds of misusing the funds.

Speaking during the launch of this year’s county bursary fund, the county boss said there is urgent need to review laws governing the kitty to ensure there was 100 per cent efficacy in administration of the monies.

“It is time we review the laws guiding administration of the fund to ensure all the needy and only them benefit from the fund and as well minimise possible misappropriation of the monies,” Nyaribo said.

Streamline operations

He said in an impromptu audit of the beneficiaries in schools in a single ward, audit discovered there were 369 learners who could not be accounted for and who were listed as beneficiaries.

“In a single school, 100 beneficiaries were not enrolled in the school,” he said.

The county boss made the revelation two months after he promised to streamline operations in the county.

Dealing with the county’s abnormal wage bill that stands at 49 per cent against the 30 per cent allowed by Controller of Budget as well as flushing out ghost workers and eliminating corruption were his main commitments during inauguration.

The event was also graced by County Commissioner Amos Mariba and some members of the County Assembly.

Mariba assured Nyaribo that investigations will be conducted to bring into book anyone who could be liable for the alleged corruption.

He warned school heads against sending learners home for fees saying the Government was determined to fund schools.
