Police accuse truck drivers of stage-managing robberies
Police in Naivasha are accusing long distance truck drivers of stage-managing robberies along major roads in the area.
Their claim follows a series of suspicious robberies along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road targeting trailers heading to or from neighboring countries.
Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru revisited an incident over the weekend where unknown people allegedly blocked a trailer from Uganda and made away with coffee beans worth over Sh10 million.
During the incident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, the driver claimed to have been blocked by a white car that was full of armed men who later abandoned the empty trailer in Mai Mahiu.
But speaking in his office on Tuesday, Waweru claimed that the driver colluded with the suspects who are on the loose to steal the coffee that was destined for the Port of Mombasa.
“We have seen a trend where drivers are selling goods on transit and later stage-managing a robbery along the major roads,” he said.
He challenged employers to make sure they had the background information of their drivers to avoid the current crisis.
Meanwhile, police in Naivasha have arrested two suspects believed to be the masterminds behind a new wave of robbery targeting parked vehicles.
The two were arrested in Nairobi and a car belonging to a bank manager recovered after it was stolen in one of the streets in Naivasha a week ago.
In the last couple of weeks, several estates in the town have been hit by series of robberies with five vehicles stolen in the period by a well-organised group.
The group has been targeting vehicles parked outside residential plots with some vandalizing them to the anger and concern of area residents.
According to the OCPD, the two suspects were assisting police with investigations over the robbery incidents.
He noted that initial investigations indicated that the two were the masterminds behind the robberies adding that it was a matter of time before they caught up with the others.
“We have arrested two suspects and recovered one of the stolen vehicles and it’s a matter of time before we get all those involved,” he said.
