Police pursue 132 suspects in wake of Coast gang attacks

County commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo.

Authorities in Mombasa have obtained a list of 132 names of people believed to be  members of criminal gang behind surging crime rates in the county.

County commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo said security officers are pursuing the suspects in all the six sub-counties in Mombasa: Nyali, Kisauni, Mvita, Likoni, Changwamwe and Jomvu.

“We have a list of 132 names which we are pursuing and we are confident they will help us bust the network of criminals in the region,” he said during a press briefing in Mombasa.

The revelation comes at a time when cases of machete-wielding gangs terrorising residents in parts of Mombasa are on the rise, the latest being a Wednesday incident at Milango Saba and Junda areas, in which gangs injured residents before five suspects were killed by a mob and police.

Kitiyo called upon all parents within Mombasa to be part of the fight against the gangs terrorising the residents, especially in Kisauni.

He said most of the gangs are enabled by parents, who have failed to guide the youth.

“It is upon parents to play the guidance role in their children’s careers and social lives,” said Kitiyo.

Achieve strategy

Speaking at the county offices, the security official said the county has  achieved the 100 per cent transition strategy for education, with over 99 per cent of students enrolled in high schools and the rest enrolled in colleges and polytechnics.

“The students who sat for their national exams were 18,803 and so far the ones who have been admitted into learning institutions are 18,657 students.

The rest have joined polytechnics and colleges with only one student reported dead,” he said.
