President Uhuru Kenyatta will next Monday preside over a high-level conference to take stock of the country’s fight against Covid-19 and give the way forward.

A statement from the Head of the Public Service Joseph Kinyua said the national conference will be followed by the 12th presidential address where Uhuru will unveil “containment measures that shall guide Kenya into the new normal.”

In the meantime, the statement stated, the president has extended the subsisting containment measures announced last month upto Tuesday next week.

Take stock

The Monday conference, Kinyua said, will review the country’s Covid-19 response and take stock of the efforts made in containing the virus.

“(The conference is expected to) outline a strategy for building and sustaining momentum with regard to recovery and resilience in a manner that ensures that Kenya bounces back better and stronger,” Kinyua said.

“It is therefore notified for the General Information that His Excellency the President has extended the subsisting containment measures announced during the Eleventh Presidential Address up to September 19,” the statement added.

Uhuru, in his 11th address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic on August 26, retained some of the protocol measures such as curfew, social distancing and closure of bars for 30 days.

The measures were to lapse on Saturday but have now been extended to Tuesday.

Further, the Monday conference will showcase good practices which Kinyua said have strengthened economic resilience and self-reliance, including the strengthening of our capacity for local manufacturing.
