Report unites rivals Mutua and Muthama
The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report has brought together hitherto sworn political enemies in Ukambani, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and former Senator Johnstone Muthama.
The two who have previously been engaged in a battle for political supremacy in the region, have now closed ranks to oppose the report .
The highlights of the report include the return of a Prime Minister’s position, increase in the number of MPs from the current 349 to 360 and scrapping of the position of Woman Representative.
Speaking separately, the two leaders vowed to lead campaigns against the report, saying it was tailored to serve the interests of a few politicians at the expense of the common mwananchi.
Mutua who has been on a countrywide tour to popularise his 2022 presidential ambitions, termed the report as a desperate effort to create positions for a few individuals.
More divisions
“I don’t always agree with Deputy President William Ruto but we are together in demanding that political parties with elected leaders, religious leaders, civil society, academia, wananchi, all elected and opinion leaders, be fully and meaningfully involved, otherwise if they ignore us we will say No,” said Mutua when he addressed a gathering in Matuu town.
According to Mutua, the BBI project will fail due to the fact that it favours a certain class of politicians and is not mwananchi-centred.
And Muthama, while addressing the media at his Mua home in Machakos County, rubbished the report terming it a recipe for more divisions in the country.
“What is so special about Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga that when they agree to work together, the whole country is united?
This BBI is only made for the two people and not the over 40 million Kenyans,” said Muthama.
The politician said that Kenyans were wise and will not be misled to endorse a document that will only benefit a few people.
“We are saying No, from the first day; all we want is a president with a capacity to lead and unite this country,” said Muthama.
