Report: Women likely to live longer than men
Women are more likely to live longer than men in Kenya, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report reveals.
The human development report released last week revealed that women are likely to live fours more than men.
“Kenya women’s life expectancy is at 68.7 years compared to 64 years for men,” the report showed. Overall, the life expectancy at birth in Kenya stands at 66.3 years.
Challenges faced
Though women life expectancy is high, they are faced with numerous challenges.
UNDP points that maternal mortality ratio is 510 deaths in every 100,000 live births. According to the report, 16 million Kenyans live below the poverty line depending on less than Sh200 a day.
UNDP Kenya representative Walid Badawi said inequalities in human development hurt societies and weaken social cohesion and people’s trust in government, institutions and each other.
“Report also stated that they hurt economies, wastefully preventing people from reaching their full potential at work and in life,” he said.
