Burial arrangements for police sergeant Kipyegon Kenei who was found dead with a bullet wound in the head two weeks ago are in top gear.

Family spokesman Eliud Chesoni said the body of Kenei, a security officer at Harambee House Annex where Deputy President William Ruto’s office is located, would be ferried to Nakuru on Friday for overnight stay at Umash Funeral Home.

On Saturday morning, the body will be taken to his parents’ home in Chamasis in Rongai, Nakuru county, for burial.

“Everything is ready. He will be buried on Saturday but of course Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are going on with investigations,” he said.

Kenei, an Administration of Police officer, was found dead in his house in Nairobi’s Imara Daima Estate on February 20.

Although police had earlier described it as suicide, detectives now believe he was killed by three people who are believed to have visited his home before his  body was found.

Detectives are now working round the clock to crack what appears to be a well calculated murder that also saw his phone records cleaned and his social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, de-activated.

His father, retired chief John Chesang, described the death of his son as the saddest moment in his life saying that he had a lot of hopes in him.

“We don’t understand what happened but what we all know as a family is that my son never killed himself.

He was a vibrant and jovial young man with great plans. Whoever killed my son should be brought to book,” he told the People Daily on phone.

Record statement

Kenei leaves behind a fiancee and two children.

He had been summoned alongside four other police officers to record a statement over a Sh39 billion arms scam involving former Sports Cabinet secretary Rashid Echesa.

The former CS has been charged with defrauding some foreigners of Sh11 million that had been paid to facilitate the arms deal, which was allegedly signed at Harambee Annex. He has denied the charges.

Administration Police are expected to preside over the final burial rites including the three-gun salute.
