Sonko aides questioned over city chaos plans
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Simon Mbugua and Nairobi County Chief of Staff Mugo Kamau were yesterday evening grilled by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers over allegations that they were mobilising youth to cause chaos when Governor Mike Sonko appears in court today for the ruling on his bail application.
The Nairobi Police Commander Philip Ndolo last evening confirmed the two were summoned and grilled over the allegations but did not immediately respond to questions about whether the two would be detained or charged.
On Friday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji and the National Police Service (NPS) spokesman Charles Owino said they had information some people were planning to cause chaos in the city and warned that stern action would be taken against those involved.
“There have been misguided attempts to intimidate, threaten and malign investigating officers and agencies. I have directed the law enforcement agencies to investigate any such attempts,” said Haji.
He added: “Any attempts to instigate unrest and incite the public will be countered by the government.”
Police threw a ring of protection around the city after information filtered through that some people had planned demonstrations and protests across the city in retaliation to the arrested on the governor who was arrested last Friday.
